Round of sixteen: competition regulations
Teams will play their third and last games in the first round of the FIFA World Cup FRANCE 98 between 23 and 26 June, after which the sixteen teams that qualify for the round of sixteen (27 to 30 June) will be known. As per World Cup regulations, only the top two teams in each group will qualify for the round of sixteen. Qualifying criteria are as follows (a win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 point and a loss 0 points):
- The number of points
- The goal difference
- The number of goals scored
- The score of direct encounter
- In the case of complete equality, there will be a draw
Beginning with the round of sixteen, there will be a knockout phase. If there is a draw at the end of regulation play, the two teams will play extra time. The first team to score in extra time (the “golden goal”) will be qualified for the next round. If the match is still tied after two 15-minute halves, there will be a penalty shoot out.
As for cards received during the first round, only players who received just one yellow card will have amnesty in the round of sixteen.
