Danemark – P. Schmeichel: “If we beat Brazil, it will be the sensation of the century!”
Comments made at Stade André Deferarri, Bandol (Var county):
“To beat NIGERIA 4-1, we played the best football I’ve seen since I’ve played … now we play BRAZIL, the absolute favourites, and we’re the underdogs as we like to be.
BRAZIL have seen what we’re capable of. Having said that, we’ll certainly be trying very hard, because you only play perhaps one quarter final in your career, especially when you’re from DENMARK, and to play BRAZIL is a dream come true for any footballer. We did it against NIGERIA, we could do it against BRAZIL.
I think the young player, Martin JORGENSEN (21) has been playing very well. He played magnificently last night and he’s the kind of player you would like to have come through because he’s quick… he’s got a lot of skill. He likes to dribble as well. He’s not the sort of footballer we’re used to in DENMARK. He’s one to look for, not only on Friday, but in years to come.
If you put BRAZIL under a lot of pressure as NORWAY did, the obviously I think you can probably create a couple of chances. The problem is if BRAZIL go one-nil up or two-nil up, then the game will be very difficult to get back. Having said that, I don’t think we have seen the best of BRAZIL yet.
I feel if we can play as well as we did last night, we’ve got a chance, but it will take a great performance.”
“I think that it’s fantastic for a small country like DENMARK, and especially because for the first two or three games, we didn’t play that well. But we got through to the next round and now we’re in the quarter finals. We played exceptionally well last night, and now we have a lot of confidence. If we lose, okay, people expect that, but if we win, then it will be the sensation of the century!”
“Having one day less than BRAZIL to recuperate is not a big problem, as we’ll be playing in 5 days. In the quarter final, we won’t be paying too much attention to their game. We’re professionals and we live for moments like this. NORWAY was able to beat BRAZIL, so why not us… we have nothing to lose. Against FRANCE, the heat was a big problem, but we’ll be playing the quarter final in the evening in NANTES, where it’s not as hot. We could surprise everyone and make it to the Final, and why not against FRANCE…”
