The World Cup, as seen by… Sergei Bubka

“The level of play is excellent and the organisation appears to be very good as well, with every match booked-out…” … Former Olympic Gold Medallist and World pole-vault champion, Sergei Bubka has been following the World Cup from the beginning, and is a great football fan.

The 33 year-old Ukrainian athletic legend is, like many people, a fan of the favourites, BRAZIL: “It would be great to see BRAZIL and FRANCE playing together in the Final…”

Bubka, speaking from his home in Monaco, says his favourite player in the Cup this year is Roberto CARLOS (BRAZIL, N°6).

Proof of his love of the sport came earlier this year, with his participation in April in the “Star Team for Children” football match in Monte Carlo, where he played alongside H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco, Max Biaggi, Alberto Tomba, Thierry Boutsen and Ivan Capelli, just to name a few, against a team of former Juventus players from ITALY.

“I played as a forward,” says Bubka, “but I’m equally at ease in any position… I just like to get out there and play…”

Funds raised by the Star Team are donated to AMADE, a charity created by Princess Grace of Monaco for underprivileged children around the world.

Bubka will be travelling to NORWAY next week, where he will be participating in the League of Champions competition Thursday 9 July in Oslo.
