Nigeria set to become strongest African challenger
The draw for the 1998 World Cup in France confirmed that the strongest African threat seems likely to come from Nigeria. The star-studded Super Eagles were paired with Spain, Paraguay and Bulgaria in Group D and should be capable of reaching the knockout second phase.
Nigeria trounced Bulgaria 3-0 in their opening match of the 1994 finals in the United States and also defeated Greece convincingly before losing to Italy in the second round.
One of the most powerful teams to represent Africa looked set for victory when they led 1-0 with just minutes left only for Roberto Baggio to level and then score the extra-time winner.
Spain and Bulgaria pose the biggest challenges although Paraguay deserve respect if only for goalkeeper Jose-Luis Chilavert, who combines acrobatic saves with an ability to bend free kicks into the net.
South Africa, the country that succeeded Nigeria as African Nations Cup holders last year, reacted positively to being paired with hosts France, Saudi Arabia and Denmark in Group C.
“The match against Denmark will determine who accompanies France into the second round and I expect my boys to succeed,” coach Clive Barker told state television.
Cameroon, quarter-final heroes of the 1990 finals, face three-time winners Italy, Chile and Austria in Group B and recent form suggests the Indomitable Lions could struggle.
The draw in Marseille did Morocco no favours as they drew defending champions Brazil, Scotland and Norway in Group A with little hope of progress.
Tunisia, back after a 20-year absence, must also have hoped for better luck than being paired with Romania, Colombia and England and are certain to be the outsiders.
