Argentina’s star striker Gabriel Batistuta is under investigation for alleged tax evasion and had 50,000 dollars of his assets frozen by the Argentine authorities on Tuesday.
The latest big name to fall victim to the Argentine government’s tough financial crackdown, Batistuta allegedly failed to pay 124,564 dollars relating to his 1991 transfer from Boca Juniors to Fiorentina.
The action has no bearing on Batistuta’s preparations for the World Cup, in which Argentina meet Japan, Jamaica and Croatia in the first round.
Coach Daniel Passarella can sympathise with his player as he was in hot water himself over the importing of a yacht.
