Sybase takes on software’s toughest challenges — like providing database and Internet software technology for the 1998 World Cup Games!
This summer, the vast operations behind the 1998 World Cup football games in France will rely on products from Sybase, Inc. Which means fans will get Web access sooner. Players and officials will get their credentials faster. Journalists — even those who can’t travel to France — will get up-to-the-minute details on the top sporting news of the day. Sybase, Inc. has teamed with Hewlett-Packard and EDS to create the most technologically advanced information system ever designed for a single sporting event — that’s the 1998 World Cup of Football scheduled for 10 cities in France during June and July. The 1998 World Cup will require an enormous information network, complete with databases, Internet software technology, advanced data replication capabilities, and superior user interfaces. Chosen by the World Cup Organizing Committee as the Official Software Supplier for this massive event, Sybase will provide a complete software solution that supports more than 100 local area networks (LANs) in a single wide area network (WAN) environment. Getting a kick out of Sybase So how, exactly, does database technology support an international sporting event? Consider that hundreds of thousands of fans will be attending 64 matches between 32 world class teams over the course of five weeks. The scheduling and ticketing issues alone are enormous. And there’s much more. Consider this: Sybase software products will link the World Cup’s Paris-based headquarters — the ComitÚ Franšais d’Organisation de la Coupe du Monde, or CFO — to an International Media Center that will provide digitized video feeds from each of the 64 matches, accessible through the World Cup OnLine service within an hour of the event! And in each city Sybase software will connect the personnel at CFO offices, the stadium, hospitality village, press center, accreditation center, plus equipment warehouses. The main objective is to provide vital information “anytime, anywhere” for all offices and venues. |
The complete network will include more than 1,800 client workstations, each with multimedia capability to support 9,000+ international media representatives. The software will manage registration for 1,200 athletes, coaches, and sports officials. Plus, it will handle accreditation and badging of over 50,000 participants, and ticketing and security for 2.5 million spectators.
“Sybase is clearly the right software choice for the 1998 World Cup,” said Philippe Verveer, Director of Information Technology for the 1998 World Cup. “The Organizing Committee recognizes the superior performance and functionality that Sybase, Inc. products offer in bringing together robust Internet and client/server infrastructure.” In a very real sense, Sybase products will form the backbone of a “virtual corporation” at the World Cup — one that faces mission-critical business issues regarding employees, accounting, personnel, HR, and security. Sybase, Inc. helps businesses manage and deliver applications, content and data anywhere they are needed. Sybase’s products, combined with its world-class professional services and partner technologies, provide a comprehensive platform for delivering the integrated solutions businesses need to be successful.
