Spain, ranked second in the world only to Brazil by FIFA, look to have a bright chance of playing a pivotal role in France 98Quarter-finalists twice, in 1934 and 1986, they boast a superb record under chain-smoking manager Javier Clemente, the first man to coach Spain in two World Cup finals.

Qualifying posed little problem as they cruised through their group undefeated, inflicting en route heavy defeats on Malta and the Faroe Islands. Alfonso of Real Betis was in convincing goal scoring form but it is the young prodigy Raul who more than anyone holds the key to success.

Real Madrid’s precocious talent — he celebrates his 21st birthday during the competition — would be a jewel on any side, and Clemente will be praying he hits form at the right time.

At the other end of the age spectrum is veteran goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta. The 36-year-old was part of Barcelona’s 1992 European Cup winning team, has three World Cups under his belt and over 600 appearances in the Spanish League.

Fernando Hierro, starring in his third finals, is frequently first class in defence or midfield and provides on-pitch inspiration. Up front, aside from Raul, Spain has other potential match winners like Luis Enrique, who scored four in the qualifiers, prompting his manager to observe: “If Luis Enrique was a girl I’d marry him”.

Another vital frontman is Kiko, whose reputation was forged when scoring a brace of goals in the 1992 Olympic final. Spain went out to Italy in the last World Cup and to England in Euro 96 but as their high ranking suggests it will be a surprise if they do not reach the knockout stages at the very least.
