Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he is not interested in signing Italy World Cup star Roberto Baggio and has slammed as “crazy”  the mega-money sums surrounding the striker. Double-winners Arsenal were rumoured to be in a head-to-head battle with Serie A giants Inter Milan for the services of the 31-year-old Bologna striker.

Bologna president Guiseppe Frascara Gazzoni is desperate to hang onto Baggio who can leave one-year into a two-year deal he signed last summer, providing he exercises the clause by July 15. Gazzoni, however, admitted he was “99.9 percent” certain to lose Baggio and revealed Arsenal were prepared to offer him 6million over three years, with Inter 4 million pounds over the same period. But Wenger, eager to strengthen the squad ahead of the Gunners’ Champions’ League campaign next season, said: “I just want to say to our fans that that kind of information is wrong.”   The numbers are crazy for me and we are not interested in him at all. “We can’t come out every day and say that is not true. We try to be discreet and do our work behind-the-scenes, but we have to accept it (the speculation) because everybody is being linked with Arsenal.” “We will try to get good players, not necessarily famous ones, but very good players who can integrate into our wage structure,” he added.
