FRANCE 98 – FIFA praises Emmanuel Petit's Fair-play

On Saturday 4 July, the FIFA’ Chief Press Officer Keith Cooper commented on the different fair-play trophies given out by FIFA during the press briefing which took place at the Briefing Room in the International Media Centre (CIM).

FIFA spoke highly of the sporting spirit demonstrated by the French player Emmanuel PETIT (17) during the quarter final match FRANCE – ITALY. In fact, PETIT kicked the ball into touch because an Italian player was lying on the field hurt, despite the fact that the FRANCE team was in the throes of an offensive.

The FIFA clarified the difference between the Fair-play Prize, which is awarded yearly to a team, player, coach, or group of fans (such as the Irish last year), and the Fair-play Award, which is given to the team that accumulates the greatest number of fair-play points during the World Cup. The ENGLAND team is currently in the lead according to the points and criteria system set up by the FIFA Fair-play Commission.
