FRANCE 98 – FIFA's ideal team

On Friday 10 July at 12h30, there will be a lunch for the media to announce the ideal MASTERCARD World Cup 98 team. The team will be made up of the best players in each position.

A first team was drawn up by the FIFA technical studies group, based on the performances by players in the quarter-finals. The finalists are :

  • Goalkeepers: CHILAVERT (PAR), BARTHEZ (FRA), PAGLIUCA (ITA), VAN DER SAR (HOL)
  • Defenders: AYALA (ARG), GAMARRA (PAR), DESAILLY (FRA), SIMIC (HRV), F. DE BOER (HOL), JUNIOR BAIANO (BRA)
  • Wingers: ROBERTO CARLOS (BRA), CAFU (BRA), THURAM (FRA), JARNI (HRV)
  • Midfield: DUNGA (BRA), RIVALDO (BRA), M. LAUDRUP (DEN), HENRY (FRA), ZIDANE (FRA), ORTEGA (ARG), R. DE BOER (HOL), OVERMARS (HOL), INCE (ENG), COCU (HOL), ASANOVIC (HRV), HIERRO (ESP)
  • Attackers: HERNANDEZ (MEX), ILIE (ROM), BATISTUTA (ARG), VIERI (ITA), BIERHOFF (GER), SALAS, (CHI), OWEN (ENG), FLO (NOR), RONALDO (BRA), B. LAUDRUP (DEN), SUKER (HRV), BERGKAMP (HOL)

The 16 best players will be chosen after the semi-final.

Pele will attend the lunch, together with members of the FIFA technical studies group: Gérard Houllier (France), Dr. Josvef Venglos (Slovakia), Andy Roxburgh (Scotland) and Osvaldo Ramirez (Peru).

Individual and group interviews will take place immediately after the results have been announced.
