FRANCE 98 – England pays homage to war victims
David Davies, ENGLAND’s (Group G) Press Officer, visited the English Cemetery in La Baule on Wednesday 17th June. Accompanied by ex-servicemen, he stopped in front of the graves of soldiers killed in the German attack on the steamship Lancastria in 1940. 3000 people perished in the shipwreck, less than five nautical miles from the port of Saint-Nazaire. “Such a place humbles me” declared Davies as he placed a wreath on one of the graves. “We owe the fact that we are participating in this world football tournament today to the courage of those who gave their lives to defend our freedom. Those who put our nation to shame could do well to think about that,” he concluded, in reference to the violent incidents in MARSEILLE.
