Paul Gascoigne was warned on Tuesday by fellow footballer Gary Mabbutt that he must change his ways if he has serious ambitions to become a manager.
The Middlesbrough and England midfielder has declared his desire to become involved in management when he hangs up his boots. Former Tottenham captain Mabbutt, a close friend and big fan of the controversial star, said: ” It is a good sign from Paul that he is thinking along those lines. It is positive in terms of the maturity he is showing.
“Everyone knows that Paul has got tremendous football ability, but that he is also prone to the odd moment of madness that can ruin things for him and attract the wrong type of headlines.” As a player, he has shown for England that he is an important cog in the wheel.
“But he is still on that learning curve and still enjoys a laugh and a joke. If Paul became a manager he would have to change. A player and a manager are on two completely different sides of the fence. The skills you need for each are totally different. “The way you behave has to be totally different. You are no longer one of the chaps in the dressing room, you are out on your own in with all the team selections and the training.”
