FRANCE 98 – Parc des Princes
Completely renovated in the early 1970s, the “new look” Parc des Princes was inaugurated at the end of May 1972. And ever since, over some 25 years, it has been the setting for many of football and rugby’s biggest occasions. The “Parc” hosted in 1978 a France – Czechoslovakia qualifying match for the 1978 World Cup which saw the arrival of the “Platini Generation”. And who could forget France-Bulgaria on 16 November 1977, France – Netherlands in November 1981 or France – Yugoslavia in November 1985? Matches which helped France qualify for the World Cup finals the following year. And then, of course, there was France-Spain on 27 June 1984, which saw “les blues” win their first major title, the European Nations Cup, thanks to goals by Michel Platini and Bruno Bellone. And when Michel Platini lifted the cup, the whole Parc des Princes erupted. |
