Cesare MALDINI
The ex- AC Milan sweeper (4 Italian League Championship medals and one European Cup winner’s medal in 1963) didn’t enjoy the same degree of success playing for his country as for his club side in the capital of Lombardy (he won only 14 caps). After coaching Foggia, Terni and Parma, in 1980 Maldini joined the national coaching staff at the Italian Football Federation alongside Enzo Bearzot, and played his part in Italy’s victorious 1982 World Cup campaign. In 1986 he took charge of the National Under-21 team and went on to win 3 European titles (1992, 1994 and 1996).

In December 1996 he took over from Arrigho Sacchi in charge of the Squadra Azzura with the brief of qualifying his side for the 1998 World Cup finals. This was accomplished on 15 November.
