Cameroon – F. Omam Biyick: “We are hurt, we are hungry” 22.06.98 20h32 CET Comments from NANTES
Francois OMAN BIYICK, captain (7):
“We have a real World Cup match ahead of us. The figures are simple: we absolutely have to score one goal more than CHILE to qualify for the next round. We have no choice and we’re going to give our all to make it. We are hurt, we are hungry. It’s not going to be easy, but in football, nothing is impossible. Our inexperience hasn’t allowed us to give our maximum yet, but that will come, we have to be patient. Some of the guys on the team haven’t given their best yet themselves, but they will tomorrow, against CHILE. CHILE is a beautiful team but that’s not something we are too preoccupied with, we prefer to concentrate on our game.”
Joseph-Desire JOB (21):
“I’m very pleased to be starting in this match. Our players are very keyed up. When you’re faced with two dangerously talented strikers like SALAS (11) and ZAMORANO (9) you can’t let your guard down. But we generally play an attacking game, and we won’t change that. Raymond KALLA’s (5) exclusion is a hard blow for us, the coach has had to work out a different defensive strategy that can lead us into the next round.”
Saloman OLEMBE (20):
“For me, being on the team will only be gratifying if we end up winning against CAMEROON. Claude LE ROY has put me behind the attackers, which will allow me a lot of offensive freedom. The inflammation I had in my right thigh is only a bad memory now as we approach the most important meeting of the first round. We’re going to take this match by keeping up a strong attack so we can score quickly. Knowing the pitch at La Beaujoire will definitely help me.”
Rigobert SONG (4):
“The defeat we conceded to ITALY only a bad memory. We have one match left to make it through to the second round and we’re going give all we’ve got to beat the Chileans. Since the start of the World Cup we have suffered too much in our games. It is time to start thinking about scoring goals and to stop just defending for ninety minutes. The coach has unveiled the composition of the team, but I still don’t know if I’ll be playing on the left as a sweeper or a full-back.”
