FRANCE 98 – USA-Iran – S. Sampson: “This is the most important match we've played since 1990”
Comments made in LYON
“At the soccer level, this is the most important match we’ve played since 1990. This match is politically important for the two governments. Our single goal is to show that we’re a soccer-playing country. It’s hard to ignore the pressure linked to this match. The players already know where they’re playing and our tactics, but naturally I have no comment to make on that.
Obviously, we can’t afford not to play offensively. We need three points and that means we’ll need to attack harder than against GERMANY (Group F). We’re lucky to have talented front players, but we can’t forget to defend, because this is what’s set the stronger teams apart so far.
I’m expecting a very physical match, and given the various interpretations of the rule on tackles from behind, the role of the Swiss referee Urs MEIER will be crucial. My players must be careful about this”.
