FRANCE 98 – England – S. Campbell: “Beating Colombia isn't an end in itself, we want to go further than that in this tournament”
Comments from La Baule-Escoublac (Loire-Atlantique)
“Despite the fact that we lost against ROMANIA I still say we played well. The final score should have been different, anyway. Some people in the media have criticised our defence, but when your players have trained with the best European clubs they can adapt to whatever system the coach wants. After that, each player has his own qualities. As for the meeting with COLOMBIA, we’re pretty relaxed about it, even though we know it won’t be easy. We’ve lost one battle, not the war. Anyway, beating COLOMBIA isn’t an end in itself, we want to go further than that in this tournament.”
“Since the beginning of this World Cup, I’ve had to prove that I deserve my place on the team. I’m pleased with the new responsibilities the coach has given me. My role is to block them from winning the ball back, without forgetting to add an offensive touch. Our defeat by ROMANIA has dashed our hopes of finishing first in our group. But we’re not going to draw against COLOMBIA, we’re going to win – to boost our confidence before we enter the second round.”
