The sixteen best players in the world according to FIFA

This morning, Friday 10 July, the International Football Federation (FIFA) announced their official selection of the sixteen best players in the world. The team, which included some sixty players after the first round, was announced after the deliberations of the FIFA technical studies group, presided over by the Swiss, Jurg Nepfer and composed of several renowned technicians, such as the Slovak Joszef Venglos, the Scotsman Andy Roxburgh and the Frenchman Gérard Houllier.

BRAZIL and FRANCE, the two finalist nations, are the teams with most players in the selection with four from each. The NETHERLANDS, the unfortunate semi-finalists vanquished by BRAZIL, are next in line with three players.

  • Goalkeepers: CHILAVERT (PAR), BARTHEZ (FRA)
  • Defenders: GAMARRA (PAR), DESAILLY (FRA), F. DE BOER (HOL), Roberto CARLOS (BRA), Lilian THURAM (FRA)
  • Midfield: DUNGA (BRA), RIVALDO (BRA), M. LAUDRUP (DEN), Zinédine ZIDANE (FRA), Edgar DAVIDS (HOL)
  • Attackers: RONALDO (BRA), B. LAUDRUP (DEN), SUKER (HRV), BERGKAMP (HOL)

The FIFA group have selected six players in reserve:

  • Goalkeeper: Edwin VAN DER SAR (HOL)
  • Midfield: Jay Jay OKOCHA (NGA), Juan VERON (ARG)
  • Attackers: Thierry HENRY (FRA), Michael OWEN (ENG), Christian VIERI (ITA)
