Germany-USA : enemy brothers

The match that will pit the UNITED STATES (Group F) against GERMANY (Group F), will take place Monday 15 June at 21h00 at the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris.

Eight of the American players who have played or still play in the Bundesliga (in GERMANY), will have the opportunity to play alongside their normal team-mates, this time as opponents. The players include: Jeff AGOOS (Washington D.C. United, 12), Chad DEERING (VfL Wolfsburg, 15), Thomas DOOLEY (Columbus Crew, 5), Brian MAC BRIDE (Columbus Crew, 20), Joe-Max MOORE (New England Revolution, 9), David REGIS (Karlsruher SC, 6), Claudio REYNA (VfL Wolfsburg, 21), and Eric WYNALDA (San Jose Clash, 11).

This match-up is no doubt most symbolic for the American captain and sweeper, Thomas DOOLEY, who lived in GERMANY until 1992, where he played in more than 250 professional matches (Schalke 04, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Kaiserslautern). In fact, his father was an American military captain who married in GERMANY. This is quite a dilemma for this American by blood, German by heart. Still, he makes it very clear: “On Monday night, when I hear the national anthem, I’ll feel American and be proud of it. My first son lives like an American. My second only wants to go back to GERMANY on vacation. One thing is clear, when my career is over we’ll return to live in the UNITED STATES!”
