As the last World Cup of the century comes to an end, here are a few statistics concerning all the World Cup competitions since 1930:

  • 4.0625 (65 goals in total) goals per game have been scored on average since the first World Cup.
  • 3.375 (27 in total) substitutions have been made on average since 1970. (Substitutions weren’t always made as they are today, as during the first World Cup tournaments only injured players could be replaced. It was only in the 1970 World Cup that the substitution system in its current form was implemented.)
  • There have been 85,581.25 spectators per match on average for the sixteen Finals.
  • 3.55 (32 in total) yellow cards have been given per match since 1966.
  • 0.33 (3 in total) red cards have been given per match since 1966.
