FRANCE 98 – Lothar MATTHÄUS makes World Cup history

In coming on as a substitute for Dietmar HAMANN (16) in the 46th minute of the match between GERMANY and YUGOSLAVIA (Group F), Lothar MATTHÄUS (8) wrote his name into the World Cup record books. The German midfielder, 37, beat the record for the number of matches played in the final rounds of the World Cup (twenty-two). Before the game, he was equal with his compatriot Uwe Seeler, the Argentine Diego Maradona and the Pole Vladislaw Zmuda. Furthermore, MATTHÄUS (8) became the second man to participate five times in the World Cup finals (1982-1998), after Mexican goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal (1950-1966).
